Taking its name from Harriet Tubman’s given name as a child slave in Maryland (Araminta, which means defender), The Araminta Freedom Initiative is a 501(c)3 organization that is focused on dismantling the commercial viability of the human trafficking of minors in the Baltimore region and rescuing, aiding and rehabilitating its rescued victims. Each and every day, this organization is supporting the work of government agencies and community-based service providers, equipping them with effective volunteers and resources, and bringing its passion and resources to bear through awareness-raising and preventive educational events facilitated through an expanding roster of partnerships.

For May, 2013, the Thornberg & Forester (T&F) Good Works Campaign featured The Peter Benchley Ocean Awards. At the 2013 Blue Vision Summit held earlier his month in Washington, D.C., the world’s leading marine conservationists convened to advance U.S. ocean policy in the nation’s capital. As part of those festivities, many heroic individuals were presented with this year’s Peter Benchley Ocean Awards.
